GGUSD Teacher Earns County Award for Prevention Education

Santiago High School Health teacher Shannon Bennett was recognized this week for her leadership in the area of drug and alcohol prevention. During a surprise celebration organized by her students, family, and the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE), Bennett was presented with the 2022 Linda Kearns Community Prevention Award from the Orange County Substance Abuse Prevention Network.

La Quinta High School teacher Darlene Machacon is being recognized by the Country Music Association Foundation at the 2022 Music Teachers of Excellence Awards on October 19th in Nashville, Tennessee. Darlene is one of only 30 teachers nationwide, and the only California teacher, to receive the prestigious award that recognizes teachers who are having a great impact on the lives of their students and using the power of music as an avenue for change.

Military Mom Surprises Children at School with Early Return from Kuwait

Bell Intermediate student Julian Labunog and Enders Elementary student Elizah Labunog received a sweet surprise today when their mother, U.S. Army Reservist Dely Labunog, came home 2-weeks early after serving in Kuwait and Iraq for more than a year. Her husband Fabian Labunog worked with the school principals to coordinate the surprise return.

GGUSD Students Create Videos for Choose Wellness Campaign Contest

Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) students from the district’s seven comprehensive high schools are participating in a Choose Wellness campaign video contest with nearly $5,000 in cash prizes going to participating clubs. Students were encouraged to create videos that communicate the need to make mental health and wellness a priority and to end the stigma associated with getting help during a mental health crisis.
