Peters Elementary Students Inspire GGUSD’s New Eco-Friendly Lunch Tray and Program to Reduce Food Waste

With a passion to protect the environment, a group of students from Peters Elementary School helped champion a district-wide program to replace Styrofoam lunch trays with new eco-friendly trays made from recycled milk carton stock and recovered fiber.

GGUSD and Pacifica High School Strongly Condemn Offensive Video

Garden Grove Unified School District and Pacifica High School strongly condemn a video recorded last year of some students who engaged in offensive Nazi-related gestures. The video was filmed in November 2018 prior to the start of an after school hours, off-campus student athletics banquet in an empty and unsupervised room at the facility. The video was shared within a small group of students on SnapChat. It was not brought to the attention of the administration of Pacifica High School until March of 2019, four months following the banquet, at which time school administrators took immediate action and addressed the situation with all students and families involved. Federal law (Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act) prohibits the district from disclosing details of student discipline.
GGUSD Celebrates Students’ Successful Internship Experience

On July 26, Garden Grove Unified School District celebrated more than 60 students who completed a powerful summer internship experience. The summer internship program is a capstone course for incoming seniors enrolled in GGUSD’s high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathways, and is supported by Orange County United Way’s Youth Career Connections Program and the Orange County Department of Education.

At its June 18 meeting, the Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education approved an agreement with the City of Garden Grove to expand the School Resource Officer (SRO) program, increasing police resources and school safety. Parkview Elementary School fifth grade student Kathleen Ha received a magical wheelchair makeover during a school-wide celebration last week. Her new Harry Potter inspired wheelchair costume was designed by Magic Wheelchair, a non-profit organization whose volunteers build epic costumes for children in wheelchairs.

Patton Elementary School Wins $25,000 for New Technology

California State Treasurer Fiona Ma visited Patton Elementary School last week to present the school with a $25,000 check for new technology. After the check presentation, Treasurer Ma joined with the school’s staff and approximately 950 students to duck tape Patton Principal Jennifer Carter and Assistant Principal Julie Kawai to the wall.

Two GGUSD employees were recognized among an elite group of the best school employees in Orange County through the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) 2020 Teacher of the Year and 2019 Classified Employee of the Year programs. As part of this prestigious honor, Maria Mejia, paraeducator at Wakeham Elementary School, was one of six finalists for OCDE’s Classified Employees of the Year program and Kelli Colombo, special education teacher at Rancho Alamitos High School, was named as one of ten semi-finalists in OCDE’s Teacher of the Year program.
