Reading one million years in a school year is a California state standard for all eighth grade students.  Here at Garden Park Elementary School we want to acknowledge all students who read over one million words on or before the last day of the second trimester. Through the use of Accelerated Reader, we are able to continuously monitor the number of books our students read, the number of reading comprehension quizzes our students take, and how many words each student has read.

Students who read a million words on or before the last day of the second trimester become a member of the prestegious Million Word Club.  In addition to becoming a member of the Million Word Club, these students have their picture posted on the school website, they receive a Million Word Club plaque, and their name goes on the Million Word Club perpetual plaque.

The last day of the second trimester this year is March 23, 2012.

The picture of the student on the left was last year's first Million Word Club member.  He was in fourth grade and read a million words by the end of September (2011).  This remarkable reader went on to read over eight million words throughout the 2010/2011 school year.  Amazing!!

A Million Word Club Member (5th Grader)

This amazing 5th grade reader is our first student to be inducted into the Million Word Club for the 2011/2012 school year.  On September 15th, this amazing reader became the first Million Word Club member for the 2011/2012 school year.  This sensational reader also holds the 3rd, 4th and now 5th grade records for being the first to read a million words.
