Preschoolers to Have Story Time with Disneyland Resort Ambassador; Verizon Yellow Pages to Donate $15,000 to New GGUSD Education Center

A special visitor from Disneyland Resort will share her love of reading with children at the new preschool learning center and community family campus operated by the Garden Grove Unified School District. Becky Murphy, the 2004 Disneyland Resort Ambassador, will serve as guest reader for a classroom of 4-year-olds at Clinton Corner Family Campus on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 10 a.m.

The event will take place in the Family Literacy and Technology Center, 13581 Clinton St. Garden Grove.

In addition, Verizon Yellow Pages will present a $15,000 grant to Linda Reed, president of the Board of Education, and Lisa Livernois, supervisor of Clinton Corner. The Verizon Foundation grant, to be presented by local General Sales Manager Kevin Bailey, will be used for library book purchases.

The donation is the second grant from Verizon Yellow Pages to benefit the Clinton Corner. Last year, the company donated $25,000 for four Macintosh computers, a printer, and two child-size computers in the Family Literacy and Technology Center.

“Verizon’s generous commitment to community service in awarding the grants to Clinton Corner enables us to enrich our programs in literacy and technology with opportunities that would not otherwise be available to our children and their parents,” explained Livernois.

“At Verizon, we support local programs that promote literacy among both adults and children. We believe that the ability to read, write and communicate is the foundation for success in life,” said Bailey. “We are proud to partner with the Garden Grove Unified School District in its efforts to encourage parents to read to their children.”

Opened last September, Clinton Corner Family Campus is a one-stop, education center providing free adult English language-citizenship classes, preschool and school readiness services, family literacy programs, a community lending library, a computer lab, and academic after-school programs in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Garden Grove. The preschool, family literacy, and school readiness programs serve approximately 200 youngsters ages 2 to 4 years old, and most are from low-income families where Spanish or Vietnamese is the primary language spoken at home.

Ongoing funding is provided though the California and Orange County Children and Families commissions (Prop. 10 tobacco tax revenue) and the statewide School Readiness Initiative, adult education and state Community Based English Tutoring (CBET) funds, state preschool, and the Boys and Girls Club of Garden Grove.
