Date: Immediate Student Races at Paine Elementary School Come cheer the students from Paine Elementary School as they take part in one-mile and 5k races scheduled for the morning of Monday, June 14. Challenging courses for both long-distance running competitions wind through the school grounds at 15792 Ward St. in Garden Grove. The one-mile race, open only to third-graders, begins at 8:30 a.m. Prizes will be presented to the top three finishers, and awards will be given to all participants crossing the finish line whether they run, walk, or jog. The 5k (3.1 miles) race for fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade runners follows with a 9:15 starting time. There will be trophies for the fastest three girls and boys from each of the upper grades, plus the presentation of “grand champion” trophies for the top three overall finishers. Preparations for both events are extensive with runner safety at the top of the list. Precautions include two hydration stations and a first aid station. A barbeque in celebration of Flag Day takes place after the races. Call the school at (714) 663-6118 for additional information.
