Date: Immediate Bell Int. School Student is Runner-Up in OC Spelling Bee Stephanie Han of Bell Intermediate School in the Garden Grove Unified School District placed second in the 41st Annual Orange County Spelling Competition for sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students. As runner-up, she received $250 cash and $20 for an Internet shopping site. Stephanie, a 14-year-old eighth-grader, out-spelled 44 other contestants before going one-on-one with the eventual winner, Brady Yoon of El Rancho Middle School in Anaheim Hills, in the three-hour final round held Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Orange County Department of Education in Costa Mesa. The pair battled back and forth through eight words until first-place was decided by the correct spelling of stalactite. Stephanie advanced to the finals after scoring high on a written spelling test given to nearly 200 first-round participants from Orange County public and private schools on the competitions opening day February 26. She qualified for the county contest after winning the school-level spelling bee and placing among the top 10 in the district competition held last month.
