Patton Elementary School Teacher Honored by State Lottery

The California Lottery and the California State Legislature will recognize a Gifted and Talent (GATE) program teacher from the Garden Grove Unified School District as an ‘Exceptional Educator’ on the Big Spin Show to air Saturday, Feb. 14.

Sandi Ishii of Garden Grove, a grades 3-4 GATE teacher at Patton Elementary School, was selected by State Sen. Lou Correa representing the 69th District. She was nominated for the award by Dave Brown, president of the Garden Grove Education Assn.

The television segment will feature Ishii accepting her award from Sen. Correa, as well as taped footage of her interacting with students in her classroom at Patton School.

Ishii, a graduate of Pacifica High School in Garden Grove, started her career with the GGUSD in 1987 as a teacher at Russell Elementary School. She was a 2001 recipient of the Orange County Hispanic Education Endowment Fund’s Apple of Gold Award for career achievement.

Ishii played an instrumental role in the development of alternative methods for identifying gifted Hispanic students for the GATE program. She also served as a GATE mentor teacher and has been involved in training district GATE teachers at the elementary and secondary levels.

Each month since April 2001 the lottery honors exceptional educators chosen by state legislators to publicly recognize outstanding teachers whose daily efforts make significant contributions to the success of California students.
