Public Information - Press ReleaseRelease
Date: Immediate Simmons Elementary School Teacher to Receive 'Outstanding Contributions' Award Judy Newport, a third-grade teacher at Simmons Elementary School in Garden Grove, will be honored with an Outstanding Contributions to Education award by the Orange County Board of Education and the Orange County Superintendent of Schools. The Anaheim resident is one of four nominees being recognized at a special ceremony on Tuesday, March 9, at 11 a.m., in the Board Room of the Orange County Department of Education, 200 Kalmus Dr., Costa Mesa. She received the prestigious nomination for her efforts in developing extra curricular music programs for students at Simmons School. Along with the regular classroom duties, Newport directs the Simmons Musicians, a performing instrumental ensemble of 20 fourth, fifth, and sixth-graders. She remains after school up to thee days a week to work with the students, teaching them to play the xylophone, flute recorder, and percussion instruments. Most recently, Newport established an after-school student vocal ensemble known as the Simmons Singers. Most of our children come from disadvantaged households, and they would never have the opportunity to participate in such musical activities without the tireless work of Judy Newport, stated Adam Bernstein, principal. Through her efforts, not only do the children have the opportunity to perform, but they also learn the importance of teamwork, responsibility, and working hard to achieve a goal.
