Date: Immediate 7-8 District Spelling Bee Results Sophia Huynh of Jordan Intermediate School earned the title of champion of the annual spelling bee for seventh and eighth-grade students in the Garden Grove Unified School District. Ralston Intermediate School hosted the event on Thursday, Feb. 5. Sophia, a 14-year-old eighth-grader, correctly spelled the deciding word, charismatic becoming the top speller among more than 8,000 intermediate school pupils. She placed sixth in the GGUSD competition in 2003 and captured fourth-place overall in the subsequent Orange County spelling bee. In this years district competition, Sophia dueled for first-place with Peri Unver of Bell Intermediate, who earned runner-up honors. She was followed by Nicolette Lea also from Bell, third place; Hop Nguyen of Walton Intermediate, fourth-place; John Nguyen of Ralston Intermediate, fifth-place; Julie Tran of Fitz Intermediate, sixth-place; Stephanie Han of Bell Intermediate, seventh-place; Zach Arnold of Lake Intermediate, eighth-place; Earth Hasassri of Alamitos Intermediate, ninth-place; and Julie Ha of Ralston Intermediate, 10th-place. The 10 outstanding spellers qualify for the county spelling competition scheduled February 26 and 28 at the Orange County Department of Education in Costa Mesa. Each of the districts 10 intermediate schools entered its four best spellers in the district competition. Contestants were asked to spell such words as susceptible, speleology, and propinquity. Lan Quoc Nguyen, vice-president of the Board of Education, presented trophies to the top 10 spellers, and all contest entrants received certificates of participation. Frank Mackay, director of 7-12 instruction, and Debbie Youngblood, director of categorical services, served as the spelling bee judges. PR #324
