Allen, Excelsior, and Carrillo Elementary Schools Named 2004 California Distinguished Schools

Allen, Excelsior, and Carrillo elementary schools in the Garden Grove Unified School District have been named winners of the 2004 California Distinguished School Award, the state Department of Education announced Wednesday, April 21.

The three GGUSD schools are among 35 elementary schools in Orange County and 302 statewide whose applications were chosen based on overall school quality, test scores, and growth on state and federal performance measures. Each nominated school was visited by state and county educators to validate the information provided in its application.

“This recognition is a tremendous compliment for all the hard work undertaken by the teachers, administrators, and support staff at the schools for improving student achievement,” said Supt. Laura Schwalm. “They stand among California’s best in providing quality education services on a daily basis.”

Distinguished Schools represent approximately five percent of California’s public schools. As 2004 winners, each school will receive a plaque, flag, and state recognition.

Representatives from all the California Distinguished Schools will be honored Friday, May 21, in an awards ceremony and dinner at the Disneyland Hotel and Convention Center in Anaheim.
