Elementary Spelling Bee Winner Crowned

Terry Nguyen of Morningside Elementary School emerged as winner of the elementary school spelling bee of the Garden Grove Unified School District. The 11-year-old correctly spelled the deciding word, harpsichord, to become the leading speller among the more than 12,120 fourth through sixth-graders attending GGUSD schools.

More than 150 parents, teachers, and principals witnessed the competition held April 2 at Peters Elementary School. Terry, a sixth-grade Garden Grove resident, outspelled 45 other contestants to win an individual plaque plus a large perpetual trophy for display at her school.

Along with Terry, top awards were presented to the three contest finalists — Christina Tran of Hazard Elementary School, first runner-up; Vicky Nguyen of Northcutt Elementary School, second runner-up; and Mike Huynh of Carrillo Elementary School, third runner-up.

Spelling contestants were required to pronounce the words, then print their responses on individual chalkboards. The spelling bee included such words as fastidious, protuberance, and mnemonic.

All district spelling bee entrants had won the spelling competitions at their local schools. For their efforts, all school representatives received certificates of participation.
