Immigrant Adult Ed. Students to Celebrate Thanksgiving Traditions With American-Born Classmates

Immigrant students representing nations from around the globe will celebrate Thanksgiving with their American-born classmates in a traditional holiday feast on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at Chapman-Hettinga Education Center and Wednesday, Nov. 26, at Lincoln Education Center. Both are adult education schools in the Garden Grove Unified School District.

More than 400 students at Lincoln Education Center and 340 students at Chapman-Hettinga Education Center will share Thanksgiving meals of turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, and cranberry sauce from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The meals will be prepared by district Food Service employees and will be served by teachers and support staff from both sites.

Lincoln Education Center is located at 11262 Garden Grove Blvd., and Chapman-Hettinga Education Center is located at 11852 Knott St. Both sites are in Garden Grove.

The annual event will include students from adult ESL, high school diploma, GED, ROP, and special education programs (Chapman-Hettinga), as well as senior citizen arts and crafts classes. Most of the students are enrolled in English-language classes, and they arrived in the U.S. from such nations as Mexico, Afghanistan, Boznia-Herzegovina, Pakistan, Vietnam, Korea, Somalia, China, Cambodia, Lebanon, and El Salvador. For some it will be their first Thanksgiving.

“This activity represents part of the education process for immigrant students so they can learn about our culture and holiday customs,” explained Melanie Wade, a supervisor at Chapman-Hettinga. “It is also about having our school community join together in the true spirit of Thanksgiving.”
