Date: Immediate GGUSD Hosts Grand Opening of New Preschool Learning Center and Community Family Campus Garden Grove Unified
School District is one of 114 U.S. school districts selected this week
to share $98.5 million in federal Teaching American History grants. GGUSD,
the only Orange County district selected, will receive $959,014. Seventeen California school
districts were among the recipients of the competitive grants as announced
Monday, Sept. 22, by U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Page. "The district and
institutions with expertise in American history will join to help raise
student achievement and ensure that teachers develop the knowledge and
skills necessary to teach traditional American history in exciting and
engaging ways," stated Frank Mackay, GGUSD director of 7-12 instruction. The district will collaborate with California State University, Long Beach, and its College of Liberal Arts in implementing staff development programs for intermediate and high school history teachers. University faculty will work closely with the teachers, emphasizing historical skills, content, teaching methods, and making use of the American Historical Association's benchmarks for teaching history. In addition, the Calabasas-based Center for Civic Education will provide curriculum training on democratic principles and the Constitution over the three-year grant cycle. The Garden Grove Unified School District serves most of Garden Grove and portions of Santa Ana, Westminster, Fountain Valley, Stanton, Cypress, and Anaheim. PR #287
