GGUSD Educators Return for Free Back-to-School Professional Development Series

Garden Grove Unified School District educators plan to get a head start on the new school year at professional development training next week to expand their teaching skills, share classroom learning experiences, and discover additional strategies for improving student achievement.

The voluntary classes are open to nearly 2,400 elementary, intermediate, and high school faculty and administrative staff from Monday, Aug. 25, through Friday, Aug. 29, at 11 locations throughout the district. GGUSD teachers and administrators, educational consultants, and textbook publisher representatives will present the sessions.

"Such ongoing professional development opportunities enable the district to continually fortify its standards-based academic programs, improve classroom performance, and maintain strong support for our new and veteran teachers and administrators," explained Supt. Laura Schwalm.

Elementary teachers can register for free workshops on such topics as grade level training for the newly adopted language arts program, using technology to enhance language arts lessons, and two sessions targeting new faculty - one on classroom management skills and another featuring an overview of the district with information needed to begin a career in the GGUSD.

The elementary program culminates with a daylong conference on August 29 at the Garden Grove Community Meeting Center featuring keynote speaker David Chard, Ph.D., director of graduate studies at the University of Oregon. His presentation on early literacy begins at 8:15 a.m. Following this keynote address, leading K-6 teachers will conduct 13 breakout sessions on a host of subjects including math instruction, graphic organizers, physical education, the California State Arts Standards, classroom learning styles, working with ADHD students, and behavior management strategies. Teachers can attend up to three of the mini workshops.

The programs for secondary teachers and administrators start August 25, 9 a.m. to noon, at Hare Continuation High School with the keynote presentation by Harold Jacobs, a prominent math textbook author and retired teacher from Southern California. He will share strategies and illustrate techniques teachers can adopt to motivate and engage students in math classes.

The balance of the week's schedule for intermediate and high school personnel includes workshops on the new language arts program, using
CD-ROMs and the Internet for language arts lessons, how the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War impacted Orange County, the writing process, using student performance data to drive instruction, classroom science safety, classroom management, and using graphic organizers as an instructional tool.

New secondary teachers are invited to a special session August 29, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., in the district office annex conference room. Similar to the program for new K-6 teachers, this workshop will provide a wealth of information about the district, including a thorough review of available resources to help new faculty members start the school year with confidence.

The district has offered special summer classes since 1991.

The Garden Grove Unified School District serves most of Garden Grove and portions of Santa Ana, Anaheim, Westminster, Fountain Valley, Stanton and Cypress.
