Fall Registration for School District

Fall classes begin Thursday, Sept. 4, for all pupils in the Garden Grove Unified School District, a district serving more than 50,470 students from seven communities.
All district high schools are currently open for registration, while elementary school offices open on Monday, Aug. 25.

Intermediate school offices opened for new student registration on a staggered schedule starting yesterday, Aug. 18. Contact the intermediate school for specific dates and times.

Information on school attendance areas is available from the school or by calling the Child Welfare and Attendance Office at (714) 663-6391. A district map with school addresses and telephone numbers is available on line at www.ggusd.k12.ca.us.

A child must be 5 years old on or before Dec. 2 for admission to fall classes. There are no exceptions to this minimum age requirement.

As proof of a child's birth date, parents are requested to present one of the following documents to the school office: certified copy of the birth record, local registrar's statement or a county record certifying the date of birth, baptism certificate duly attested, passport, immigration visa, or an affidavit from the parent, guardian, or custodian of the minor when no other document is obtainable.

Before children can be legally enrolled in school, California law requires they receive immunizations for red measles (rubeola), mumps, German measles (rubella) - the MMR series; diphtheria, whooping cough (pertussis), tetanus - the DPT series; polio, chicken pox (varicella), and hepatitis B. The requirement for the chicken pox immunization can be waived if immunity is documented by a health care provider.

Contact the local school for specific dosage requirements for immunizations.

Children should receive a full check-up during the visit for immunizations. An examination and tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux method) given at this time will also satisfy requirements for the physical examination necessary for admission into first-grade. All required forms are available from the school office.

Along with the health requirements for elementary pupils, incoming seventh-graders must show documentation of hepatitis B immunization and receive a second dosage of MMR vaccine. The district also requires that students in grades 2-12 who are new to Orange County show proof of having a tuberculosis skin test within 18 months of starting school.

Immunizations are available from private medical providers, at clinics maintained by the Orange County Health Care Agency (714-834-4722), and at the GGUSD child health clinic at the district Assessment and Registration Center (714-663-6411), 9802 Woodbury Rd., Garden Grove. Parents must provide written documentation of the immunizations administered from their physician or health care agency.

Required immunizations will be administered from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., August 25 through September 5, excluding Labor Day weekend, at the child health clinic; and at two temporary satellite locations, August 25 through August 27 at Doig Intermediate School, 12752 Trask Ave., Garden Grove; and August 27 through August 29 at Fitz Intermediate School, 4600 McFadden Ave., Santa Ana. The offices at all three sites will close for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to noon.

The free immunization services are limited to students of the Garden Grove Unified School District. No appointment is necessary.

Additional information is available from the district Public Information Office, (714) 663-6503.
