School Wide Instructional Model - S.W.I.M

“Quality in education is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort,

intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.”

School Wide Instructional Model (SWIM) is a dynamic service delivery model where all resources at a school site are maximized to move closer to the goal of meeting the needs of all students and each student.  The school site maximizes staff by utilizing the general education teachers, resource teacher, mild/moderate teacher, and school psychologist in addition to instructional aides, part-time teachers, and site facilitators in order to help provide support to all students.

In order for SWIM to be successful there are three key elements or practices that need to be in place.

1.  A belief that all students can learn and be successful within the general education classroom when students

are provided with appropriate supports and the curriculum is taught with fidelity.

2.  School staff work together as a team to collaborate and problem solve in order to meet the needs of all students.

3.  Based upon assessment, students are placed into flexible groups where teachers strategically implement instruction

     within four instructional bands:

a.  Extended (students performing above grade level)

b.  Benchmark (students who are performing on grade level)

c.  Strategic (students who are performing one year below grade level)

d.   Intensive (Students who are performing two years below grade level).

All students receive instruction within the Houghton Mifflin Language Arts program.  Students who are in the intensive band receive Houghton Mifflin in addition to accelerated intervention within the Language! program.
