Principal’s Message:
A big thank you to all of our families and PTA leadership for the huge effort in providing new
playground equipment at our school. Our students have been very patient during the installation
process, and are now enjoying the new equipment. I am very impressed with the dedication that
was put into the fundraising process for this project. To all who were involved I want to extend
my gratitude for helping make Barker a better school.
Child Car Seat/Booster Seat:
California Law (Effective 01/01/2012):
Children under the age of 8 *OR* under 4 feet 9 inches in height must be secured in a
car seat or booster seat. Additionally, children under age 8 must be secured in the
back seat.The cost of a ticket could be more than $475.00 per child; the fine for a second offense
could be more than $1,000.00 per child.Properly buckling your children in before every trip in your
car is critical. Thousands of children are injured or killed every year by safety seats that are improperly
fastened by parents or caretakers. Remember, most collisions occur within a mile of the home - so
buckle your child in a safety seat for every trip, no matter how short.
Other laws to consider: Child left in a vehicle. A child 6 years old or less may not be left alone in a
vehicle. The child must be supervised by someone who is at least age 12. Ticket - $474.00 or more.
Smoking in a Vehicle: Smoking in a vehicle is prohibited if a child under 18 is present. Ticket - $475.00
or more.
February Holidays:
Friday, February 3rd is a non-student day for teachers to work in their classrooms. President Abraham
Lincoln’s birthday will be observed this year on Monday, February 13, 2012, and President Washington’s
birthday will be observed on Monday, February 20, 2012.
School Parking Lot Traffic:
Thank you to all of our parents for working with us to keep the traffic flowing during morning drop-off
and afternoon pick-up. Please follow the directions of the teacher on duty. They are there to ensure all
of our students reach their car in a safe and orderly manner.
Kindergarten Registration in March:
Kindergarten Registration for the 2012 – 2013 school year will begin on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at
9:00 AM. All children, who will turn five on or before November 2, 2012, are eligible to enroll. More
information about registration will be in the March newsletter.Please be aware that the cut-off date to
enroll has been changed to November 2nd (old date: Dec. 2nd) beginning in the 2012/13 school year. It
will then change to October 2nd for the 2013/14 school year, and September 2nd for the 2014/15 school
year and beyond.
